Does “Expired” Mean the DBS Check Has Expired?

Clarify that an “expired” status in uCheck refers to data retention (6 months after result), not the legal validity of the DBS check itself.

Written by Ben Nicholas

If an application is marked as “expired” in uCheck:

  • This means the applicant’s personal information for that application has been removed from uCheck’s system for data protection reasons

By default:

  • Applications expire and are removed 6 months after the result was issued

Important:

  • This does not mean the DBS check itself has expired

  • DBS checks have no fixed legal expiry date

However, good practice suggests reviewing DBS checks periodically (often every 3 years), and some regulators (e.g. Ofsted, CQC) may have their own renewal expectations.
