Eligibility for Standard and Enhanced Checks

Written by Ben Nicholas

Not every role can have every level of DBS Check.

  • Standard and Enhanced checks each have specific legal eligibility criteria.

  • These criteria depend on:

  • The type of work

  • The workforce (adults, children, or both)

  • The setting (for example, schools, care homes, regulated activity)- Examples of settings include educational institutions primarily for full-time education of children, care homes mainly for children, children’s centers, and relevant childcare premises.

If a role does not meet the legal requirements for a particular level:

  • You cannot request that level of check for that role.

This means:

  • You must always assess the role first,

  • Then choose the highest level of DBS Check that the law allows for that role.- Consider whether the role involves regulated settings or activities.
