You can complete your Basic DBS ID check in 4 steps: prepare your identity documents, share them with a verifier, wait for your verifier to confirm your documents online, then log back in to approve and submit. The whole process takes less than 30 minutes.

What you will need before you start

Before starting the ID check, make sure you have:

• 2–3 valid identity documents from the accepted GOV.UK list

• An independent verifier — a friend, neighbour, or colleague (not a family member)

• The confirmation email from uCheck containing your login link and credentials

View the full list of accepted ID documents: Basic check guidance and policies (GOV.UK)

How the ID check works

Step 1: Prepare your documents

Select 2–3 valid identity documents from the GOV.UK accepted list.

Step 2: Share your documents and login details with your verifier

Give your verifier:

• Your chosen ID documents

• The login link and login details from your uCheck confirmation email

Step 3: Your verifier confirms your documents online

Your verifier logs in using the details you provided and:

  1. Selects the ID documents you are using

  2. Enters their full name and phone number

  3. Saves the information

Step 4: You approve the ID check and submit

After your verifier completes their section:

  1. Log in to uCheck using your own email and password

  2. Review the details your verifier entered

  3. Approve the ID check

  4. Submit your application to the DBS

What happens after you submit

Once you approve the ID check:

• You receive a confirmation email stating your application has entered the vetting process.

• You can log in to uCheck at any time to track your application’s progress.

• When the DBS completes the check, you will receive a final email.

• You can download a summary certificate from your uCheck account.

A physical certificate will be posted to you within 3–5 working days
