Using an Identity Check vs a DBS ID Check

Learn the difference between a DBS ID Check and uCheck’s electronic Identity Check, how each is completed, and why an Identity Check cannot be used as a substitute for the official DBS ID Check.

Written by Ben Nicholas

You cannot use an Identity Check instead of a DBS ID Check.
You may request both through the uCheck system, but they are different processes with different rules and purposes.

Use this article to understand:

  • What a DBS ID Check is

  • How you can complete a DBS ID Check

  • What the electronic Identity Check does

  • Why an Identity Check does not replace a DBS ID Check

Difference Between an Identity Check and a DBS ID Check

You can request both checks in the uCheck online system:

  • A DBS Check

  • An electronic Identity Check

This lets you manage multiple pre-employment screening steps in one place.

However, you must treat them as separate processes:

  • A DBS ID Check is part of the DBS criminal record checking process and must follow DBS rules.

  • An Identity Check (electronic identity verification) is an additional tool for confirming identity and reducing risk, but it does not meet DBS ID requirements.

Key rule:
You cannot use an Identity Check as a substitute for a DBS ID Check.
