What is a DBS Check

Describe what a DBS check is, what information it searches for, and how employers use the resulting certificate to assess suitability.

Written by Ben Nicholas

A DBS check is a criminal record check carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service.

When you request a DBS check:

  • The DBS searches national systems (and, for Enhanced checks, local police records)

  • It identifies relevant criminal record information about the applicant

The DBS then:

  • Issues a certificate to the applicant

  • The employer can ask to see this certificate to help decide whether the person is suitable for the role

DBS checks are one part of a wider safeguarding and vetting process and must be used in line with:

  • Legal eligibility rules

  • The DBS Code of Practice
