What is happening to the original Manual Identity Verification process?

Learn how Digital Identity Checks act as an optional alternative to manual in‑person ID verification, and when applicants or employers can opt out and continue using the original manual process instead.

Written by Ben Nicholas

Digital Identity Checks give you a new, fully digital way to verify an applicant’s identity.

Digital ID verification is an optional feature and is not mandatory for completing a DBS check.

However, you can still use the original manual identity verification process if you prefer. Applicants can also choose not to use Digital Identity Checks.

It is important to note that Digital ID must be selected during the product selection stage and cannot be added later once the application has progressed.

How the Original Identity Verification Process Changes

The Digital Identity Check process is:

  • An alternative to the original method of verifying identity,

  • Not a replacement.

The original method involves:

  • Checking the applicant’s identity documents manually,

  • During a face‑to‑face meeting.

This manual checking service will continue to be available for organisations that prefer it.

When an Applicant Can Opt Out of Digital Identity Checks

If Digital Identity Checks are:

  • Not possible for the applicant, or

  • Not preferred by the applicant or employer,

then:

  • The applicant can opt out of the Digital Identity Check.

  • You can then use the original manual identity verification process instead.

To complete a manual ID check, applicants should coordinate with their employer to arrange an in-person ID verification process.
