What will results show for a Right To Work check?

Learn what a “complete” Right to Work result in uCheck really means, how to interpret errors in electronic verification, and what steps to take if an image is unclear or a document appears manipulated.

Overview

When you complete a Right to Work check in the uCheck Platform, the result will always show as “complete”.

You must understand that:

  • The Platform verifies the document, not the person’s immigration status.

  • You are responsible for deciding whether the applicant has the right to work in the UK.

What the Result Actually Means

“Complete” status

In all cases, the Platform will show the check result as “complete”.

However:

  • The uCheck Platform does not decide if the applicant is eligible to work in the UK.

  • The electronic verification service is designed to:

    • Confirm the legitimacy of the Right to Work document,

    • Not to confirm the person’s right to work.

You must:

  • Review the documents and information yourself.

  • Ascertain the person’s right to work during your own checking process, in line with Home Office guidance.

When “Complete” Includes an Error

Sometimes, the “complete” result may also show an error.

This means:

  • The electronic verification has been brought into question.

  • The system could not confidently confirm the document’s legitimacy.

Common reasons include:

  • The image you uploaded is blurry or unreadable.

  • The document is missing a signature.

  • Parts or sections of the document are missing from the image.

  • The document appears to have been manipulated, so further security checks are required.

These issues relate to the document or image quality, not automatically to the applicant’s immigration status.

Does an Error Mean the Applicant Has No Right to Work?

No.

An error in the electronic verification:

  • Does not necessarily mean the applicant does not have the right to work in the UK.

  • It only means the system couldn’t validate the document with the information and image provided.

You must investigate further before making any assumptions.

What You Can Do If You See an Error

1. Re-checking the document

In most cases, if you see an error, you can:

  • Re-check the applicant by re-uploading a clearer, complete image of the document.

Make sure that:

  • The image is sharp and readable.

  • All sections of the document are visible.

  • Any required signatures are clearly shown.

Then run the electronic verification again.

2. When the document appears manipulated

If the result shows that the document has been manipulated:

  • The Platform will not allow you to re-check the applicant using that document.

  • This is a strong indicator that the document may not be genuine.

In this situation, you should:

  • Treat the document as potentially fraudulent.

  • Seek further guidance from the Home Office or follow your internal fraud and safeguarding procedures.
