What You Must Verify During the Right to Work Check

Learn what you must manually verify during a Right to Work check, including photos and dates of birth, expiry dates, work restrictions, matching details across documents, and document authenticity and ownership.

When you complete the Right to Work check, you must confirm that:

  • Photographs and dates of birth

    • Are consistent across all documents.

    • Match the person in front of you.

  • Expiry dates

    • For permission to be in the UK have not passed.

    • You must not accept expired time-limited permission (unless specific rules say otherwise).

  • Work restrictions

    • Any work conditions are understood and followed.

    • For example, students may have a maximum number of hours they can work per week or limits on the type of work.

  • Dates and details match across documents

    • Cross-reference dates and personal details with:

      • Identity documents

      • Work permits

    • Where necessary, you may need to verify details by contacting the appropriate embassies or consulates.

  • Document authenticity and ownership

    • The documents appear genuine and untampered.

    • The documents clearly belong to the holder.
