Why you should get Basic DBS Checks for your employees

Explain why you use Basic DBS checks for roles that are not eligible for Standard or Enhanced checks, and how they add reassurance to hiring decisions.

Written by Ben Nicholas

Basic DBS checks are valuable when:

  • A role is not eligible for Standard or Enhanced checks, but

  • You still want some assurance about recent criminal history

Basic checks:

  • Show any unspent convictions or conditional cautions

  • Are available for any job role (subject to location rules)

  • Help you strengthen safer recruitment for positions that do not meet higher‑level criteria

Using Basic checks consistently can:

  • Provide an extra layer of reassurance

  • Support fair, evidence‑based hiring decisions across a wide range of roles.
