For every DBS Check, you must follow the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) ID Checking Guidance.
This guidance:
Lists acceptable identity documents
Defines the routes you can use to confirm an applicant’s identity
You must complete the DBS ID Check using one of the approved methods below.
2.1 In-Person DBS ID Check
You can complete the DBS ID Check in person when:
The applicant presents their original documents
A responsible person (e.g. employer, recruiter) checks these documents face‑to‑face
You verify that:
The person in front of you matches the photo ID (if provided)
The details on the documents match the applicant’s information
2.2 DBS ID Check via Live Video Call
You can complete the DBS ID Check using a live video call when:
The applicant shows their original documents during the call
You can see the applicant’s face and documents in real time
You verify that:
The individual matches the identification shown
The document details match the application details
2.3 Digital Identity Check Using an IDSP
You can complete the DBS ID Check digitally if:
You use a certified Identity Service Provider (IDSP)
The IDSP verifies the applicant’s identity online
The process complies with DBS Digital Identity Guidelines, typically including:
Facial recognition
Matching ID documents to the individual
When you use a compliant IDSP for DBS, this digital identity route counts as a valid DBS ID Check.
